As I finish up my week of classes, and think about gameday tomorrow, I can’t help but reflect on how much I adore this school. I see big schools get a lot of hate, and I do understand where that perspective is coming from. But, I am quite fond of my university, and I couldn’t imagine spending my college experience anywhere else. So today, I’m sticking up for the big schools, and telling you why I love my giant school…
A majority of the time, the first thing I hear from people when I tell them I attend Ohio State would be, “I can’t imagine what it would be like at a school that large.” And that was my thought too at one time. I felt completely intimidated by a school that was home to thousands of students. Being an introvert by nature, I enjoy the occasional social event, but at the end of the day I much prefer to wind down on my own.
But, then I took a tour. I realized that such a large university is home to dozens of unique experiences and opportunities. I wanted a school that would have lots of major choices for my indecisive mind and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Having attended tiny schools for the majority of my life, I felt like a giant school was just what I needed to finally burst out of my bubble.
The sense of community here is unreal
Even though there are over 50,000 undergrads alone, the sense of community and belonging I feel at Ohio State is unlike anything I have been a part of before. I still remember the first time I walked through the crowds on game day and hooked arms with a stranger to sing Carmen Ohio after the game. I’ve heard chants of “O-H” all over the country; Buckeyes are everywhere.
The campus starts to seem smaller
Yeah, I’ll admit I was pretty timid as I walked nearly a mile to my classes on the first day of my freshman year. But, once I settled into my niche and major, I started to see the same people everyday. I can tell you that, as a senior, I can probably walk most of this campus with my eyes closed. And after getting involved in clubs and my major, I wasn’t intimidated by the size of the university anymore.
There are so many cool things to do
I cannot even tell you how many unique experiences I have been able to attend just because of the size of my school. The school hosts a few concerts each year, and I’ve been able to see popular artists like Childish Gambino, Big Sean, Ke$ha, and Brad Paisley for free. The university also is able to bring in dozens of speakers each semester, ranging from olympic athletes to scholars. Ohio State really makes an effort to get students involved in on-campus activities and events.
At the end of the day, I can see that this size learning environment might not be for everyone. But, I don’t think anyone could shy away from considering a large school for college, sheerly because of the size. I see giant schools get a lot of hate, and so I’m here to say that I love my ginormous state school, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
